1519 Pineda, set out to map the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, first European to observe the Texas Coast. Some of his men were arrested by Hernan Cortes because they looked like threats
Hernan Cortes 1519, Aztecs viewed him and his men as a god because of the horses, metal armor, and firearms. Overthrew the Aztecs, Which gave Spain a base, made Spain rich with gold and silver.
Cabeza de Vaca 1526, he and his men were shipwrecked on Galveston Island, the Karankawa's gave them food and shelter, went across Texas from tribe to tribe. Finally made his way to Mexico City and told stories of Cibola, the fabled city of gold.
Coronado 1540, He and more than 1000 men went in search of the city of gold in 1540. Instead, he found the Grand Canyon, the Pacific Ocean, and present day Kansas. There was no gold in Texas, so the Spanish ignored it.
La Salle 1685, established Fort St. Louis at Matagorda Bay, hunger, disease, and Karankawas killed most of the colonists. Was murdered by his own men on his way back to Canada in 1687. Expedition was a faliure, but gave France a chance to claim Texas.
