Junior and his family move from Los Rafas, the country, to town, the city. Although Junior's uncle is not happy with their decision of moving to town, they move anyway. They move onto Fruit Avenue, not far from Immaculate Heart Parochial School where Junior will begin first grade.
On his first day of school, Junior joins a group of older boys (3rd graders) called Los Indios. This group was pretty innocent; they never did any gang-related things like most people (the Anglo kids) thought. They would just walk through enemy territory together and every Saturday, they would sneak each other into movies at the Rat House.
Mama came outside as well and started talking to the other boy's mother. Junior then finds out that he is forced to bring the boy he beat up, Denver, with him to the Rat House and hang out with Los Indios. Although Junior did not want to take him along, he had no choice because his dad gave him the choice of bringing Denver or staying in his room, and Los Indios always counted on Junior to buy the movie ticket and sneak the rest of the group in.
Junior knew he had a big problem in his hands and didn't know what he would say to Chango and the rest of Los Indios. The whole time, Junior and Denver walked in silence and Junior knew Denver was really nervous and scared.
When they both arrived at the Rat House, Chango was not happy to see Denver and immediately asked Junior what he was doing walking with him. Junior told them a lie that made them believe that Denver was just an Indian from Oklahoma. Chango was a little skeptical about the thought but ended up accepting Denver into Los Indios
Los Indios believes the lie Junior told them, Denver was then accpeted
