Popes had the power of the Chrsitian Church in the middle ages. People saw pope as God's representative.
After the Roman Empire fell many people from Italy looked at Popes as leaders too. Some popes lived a rich life but, also came in contact with the other political leaders, the kings.
In 1000, Europe was divided into many small parts due to the conflict between the Kings and the Popes. As this time the most powerful king of Europe had tooken over three countries
There would be fights between nobles and their emperors but, popes would help in between.
Disagreement started in the different parts of Europe. Western Europe was supporting popes as leaders. While, Eastern Europe wanted Kings as leaders. In 1049 Pope Leo IX was the pope.
A new pope was chosen, Pope Gregory VII. King Henry IV and Pope Gregory VII didn't get along.
