"In some places it looks as if a bulldozer has been driven over the coral reef. These ghost nets are really destructive"(45).
Signpost: Numbers & Stats
"In three day's time they saw more than one hundred drifting ghost nets... and thousands of other types of floating debris"(46).
"I just like studying the ocean, he says and I like to do it in way that I enjoy"(51).
This is a contrast and contradiction because these nets are destroying coral reefs that have taken a long time to grow about over 100's of years, and some fish live in coral reefs which is some marine animals homes also the ghost nets are killing some Marine animals by trapping them and aren't able to swim away.
Word Gap: (Buoy)
This numbers and stats matter because curt had found so much trash and ghost nets by just using 6 buoys and trackers yet that had saved many lives for marine animals. Other animals also come for them when they get stuck so its also saving them from attacking other marine life.
Summary: The Most Important Thing
1.) Curt and his team started to research on cargo ships that have had big spills of there products and where they might wash up they, It was a big deal so they looked at the oceans currents to try to track where they will wash up and how long it would take to wash up on shores.
Curt has a growth mindset because he never gave up on what he wanted to accomplish and got so much done with a lot of effort. If he had a fixed mind set ,then there could have been so much more trash in the oceans today and the environment in the ocean for marine animals would be terrible
Book Club Questions:
What do you think is one way they can start picking up trash faster and fluently so animals won't get affect by ghost nets and trash?
Definition: An anchored float serving as a navigation mark, to show reefs or other hazards or for mooring Technical term:Yes this is a technical term because there tracking trash while using the buoys
"During the three-week trip, they deployed four buoys"(48).
The most important thing, for Tracking Trash, Is that Curt and his team of oceanographers used all sorts of tools and resources from the OSCURS to track where all this trash is from and where it will wash up. They joined up with some beach combers to get some more information, and they did they were able to also track ghost nets and more floating trash with buoys. The most important thing is curt Ebbesmeyer saved many marine animals lives and homes and the economy by tracking trash.
2.)Curt helped a team of beach combers pick up a lot of trash on the shore of a state and found out how much actually washes up and can use his information to track where all of this trash is really coming from
3.) Curt used a tracker in a buoy and had found many floating ghost nets plus over 100 tons worth of floating rash he and other oceanographers had cleaned up so much and helped many animals in danger
If this continues to happen what do you think will happen to the economy and or all the marine animals that get trapped in nets?
