  • The British needed money because in 1763, Britain won a long and costly war against France.  The cost of conflict left the British with a large national debt.
  • Boston Massacre
  • The purpose of the law was to stop the smuggling of goods into and out of the colonies.
  • Beginning Of The American Revolution
  • The Sons Of Liberty organized resistance to the Stamp Act. They also burned effigies, or straw dummies, made to look like royal officials and marched through the streets sometimes commiting violent acts. The Daughters Of Liberty helped to make the boycott of British trade effective and instead of buying British goods they began spinning their own yarn and linen.
  • Declaration Of Independence
  • Boston Troops opened fire on a crowd of protester outside of the customs house in Boston.
  • On April 19, 1775, fighting broke out between Great Britain and the American colonies.
  • Congress asked a committee to draft a document explaining why the colonists thought it was necessary to free themselves from British rule.
