Desalination is when the salt content of ocean water is extracted and what is left is fresh water and a substance called brine which is extremely salty water.

The brine is returned to the ocean and the fresh water is redistributed around the world.
There is a huge market for desalination but it cost a lot of money to create and run the plants. An equivalent to this is solar energy.
Desalination interrupts the water cycle by taking water out of the ocean and adding it to animals. By animals I mean mainly humans and human water storage containers.
After humans drink it and urinate much of the water will be released the soil surface after this the water will become cleaned while going through the dirt and it will seep into the ground water, rivers, lakes and oceans.
Desalination also affects the ocean, when water is taken out of the ocean and salt content is added back in it extremely slightly lowers the freezing point of the water therefore allowing it to reach lower temps.
