In 1492 Christopher Columbus an Italian explorer for Spain,he landed in the Americas. He was looking for a faster and safer route to Asia . He landed on El Salvador in October 1492.
1519 Alonzo Álvarez de Pineda set out to map the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. He became the first European to observe the Texas coast. Some of his men were arrested by Hermán Cortés because they were considered a treat.
1519 Hermán Cortés with the help of the the Aztec enemies he was able to overthrow the Aztecs. The Aztecs possessed wealth in gold and silver and when they overthrew them they took the gold and silver. That was sent back to Spain and made Spain very rich.
In 1526 Álvar Núñez Cabeza De Vaca was ship wrecked on Galveston Island.He was taken in by the Karankawas and they gave them food and shelter.Finally he made it to Mexico City where he told the story of the fable city of gold Ciblola.
In 1540 Francisco Vásquez de Cornado went in search for the city of gold. He found the Pacific Ocean and the Grand Canyon. He also found present day Kansas. Cornado never found the gold he was looking for.
In 1685 Robert la Salle built a fort at St. Luis at Matagorda Bay it was later attacked by Indians while he was getting supplies in Mexico . Hunger,disease,and the Karankawas killed most of the colonist. La Salle was later murdered by one of his men on the way back to Colombia. The expedition was a failure, but it gave France the claim to Texas.
