Storyboard Text

  • Why are growing corn instead of wheat like we always do?
  • Well what we used to do was monoculture, but the soil is wearing out and we need other plants to replenish it back to where we can use it.
  • How will the different crops help?
  • We are actually going to start doing crop rotation, this will help the soil cause we are planting a different plant every year.
  • Each crop puts in different nutrients that helps the soil, which makes it better for the next crop.
  • What's that?
  • We also have to do a thing called clear cutting in order to have enough space for the corn to grow.
  • It's just cutting down a lot of trees in an area.
  • Yes it is, it can cause an increase in soil erosion and that means when it rains the water will carry away the soil.
  • Isn't cutting a lot of trees down at once bad?
  • But to fix the amount of soil erosion we are going to do something called cover crops. That will prevent soil erosion.
  • And it also limits the amount of weeds.
  • But before we do all of that we are going to till the soil so the nutrients in the soil get all mixed up.
