Eating and devouring, Dally, Johnny and Pony eat a meal like they haven't had it in 5 years rather than 5 days. They discuss topics such as Cherry Valence becoming a spy for the greasers and Johnny wanting to turn himself in to the police.
This fire is too close for comfort!
I have to get them out to safety!
Where is Johnny and Dally?
Pony and Johnny realize that the church they were camping at caught on fire like the embers of a cigarette. The run to see what was going on and they hear that there are children still in there.
I hope they are doing well.
They are in the ambulance behind us. You just passed out!
Hastily, Pony and Johnny run into the unstable church, chunks of burning wood falling from the ceiling, left to right. They find the children, carrying them out one by one.
Darry actually does love me!
The two finish saving the children from the fire and they try to get out but Pony’s shirt catches on fire while Johnny is stuck inside the burning church. Gallantly, Dally tries his best to get them both out safely while Pony's shirt catches on fire.
An ambulance comes to save the adolescents and they put Pony on a stretcher. In the ambulance, Pony talks to Jerry Wood, one of the teachers inside the ambulance on their way to the hospital. Pony finds out that he got burned, but not very badly.
Sodapop and Darry comes to the church to see Pony after the fifth day of his running away. They are glad to see each other and Pony learns that Darry actually did love him, unlike he thought.
