  • The Iwakura Mission.In 1871 the Japanese government sent 50 official and students to 12 countries to find the best ideas in the world and bring them back to Japan.
  • Iwakura Tomomi was the led the mission as the chief ambassador of Japan
  • The mission took the Japanese to countries like the UK, France, Germany, Russia, Switzerland, Italy, Sweden, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Austria and many more!
  • Japan has adopted many ideas from other countries. Things like the education systems from the USA and France, to the modeling their navy after the British and their army from the Germans.
  • Fun fact:In 1853 Commodore Perry showed the Japanese a Lilliputian locomotive car and tender.
  • The outcome of the mission. Within decades Japan adopted Western Ideologies like democracy, embraced steam powered machinery and all while being careful keep the traditional aspect of their society.
