  • Welcome back to AP Lang class! Today, you will learn how to write a good rhetorical analysis essay for the AP exam.
  • In your rhetorical analysis essay, you are analyzing the rhetorical strategies that the author uses, why the author uses these rhetorical strategies, and how the strategies affect the audience. 
  • 2. Good question! Some rhetorical strategies you can analyze and discuss include: repetition, point-of-view, metaphors, tone, anaphora, epiphora, and hyperbole. You can explain how and where the author uses these strategies then analyze their effects on readers through ethos, logos, and pathos. 
  • 1. What are some rhetorical strategies that authors use? 
  • To ensure you properly analyze each rhetorical strategy, try to answer these three questions in your essay. 1. How does the rhetorical strategy usually work? 2. How is the strategy working in this example? 3. Why did the author use the strategy on this audience? 
  • First, you want to show the reader that you understand what you're talking about. You need to explain what the rhetorical strategy is. Then, you need to provide an example of the strategy, most likely by quoting the piece. You must interpret its meaning and explain how well it's used. This shows you understand how the strategy is used in the piece. Lastly, you must explain how the author uses the strategy to manipulate their audience to support their claim. You should explain how this strategy causes the audience to support the author's claim or stance. 
  • 1. One last tip: if you don't know who the audience is, read the paragraph of background information that is provided at the top of each prompt. This will hint who the audience is.
