  • "After 8 o clock, Huck laid there in the grass and cool shade thinking about things feeling rather comfortable and satisfied." (pg. 38)
  • "And there was the ferryboat full of people, floating along down." (pg. 39)
  • "they was firing cannon over the water to make my carcass come to the top." (pg. 39)
  • Huck has recently escaped from his abusive father, Pap, and has escaped into Jackson's Island.

  • A ferryboat passes by carrying Pap, Tom Sawyer, and many others. They are all hoping to find Huck's body and because of a superstition, they shoot cannonballs into the water.
  • I uz powerful sorry you's killed, Huck, but I aint no mo', now .
  • One literary concept found is onomatopoeia, a word which imitates the natural sounds of a thing.  "Boom!" I see the white smoke squirt out of the ferryboats side." (pg. 39)

  • In this shocking moment, it is revealed that Jim, Miss Watson's slave, has ran off and they both discuss information that Huck has missed. Such as, people thinking either Pap or Jim has "killed" Huck.
  • "Well, I b'lieve you, Huck. I- I run off." (pg. 45)
  •  There is a special bond now forming with Jim trusting Huck not to tell anyone he is a runaway slave and Huck trusting Jim not to tell anyone he is still alive.
  • Who do they think killed me now?
  • In this chapter, both Huck and Jim are ostracized from society. Jim because he is a slave and Huck because he has an abusive father. However, in this island they have no pressure to live up to anything. And with this, the main message shows Huck and Jim finally being free from the injustice and find understanding with each other.
