Gallaudet sees Alice Cogswell playing alone and wonders why. He finds out she is deaf and wants to help her, so he travels to Europe to learn more so he can help Alice.

  • I wonder why she plays alone. Where are her friends; does her Dad even know?
  • Sailing to Europe to learn more about the art of educating deaf children 
  • Gallaudet sails off on his journey to Europe, to learn more about teaching the deaf. 
  • School for deaf in Paris, France
  • On Gallaudet's journey, he comes across a deaf school in Paris, France, and decides to learn about it. Then he meets the Braidwood family, who is unwilling to share their ways.
  • Thomas Gallaudet notices his neighbor Alice Cogswell playing alone, and wonders why this is. Thomas is funded money to sail to Europe and learn more about the art of educating deaf children. 
  • Convincing  Laurent Clerk to assist him  with deaf school establishment 
  • I have a neighbor that is deaf, who has inspired me, to start the very first school in America for deaf children. Although, I cannot do this alone, so I was wondering if you could assist me with this, since you are very knowledgeable of how to teach deaf students. Will you sail with me, back to America?
  • Thomas set off on his journey to Europe during the year 1787. He was on his way to learn more about the art of teaching deaf children, funded by Alice Cogswell's father, Mason Cogswell. During this journey, he came across a deaf school in Paris, France.
  • Sailed back to America with Laurent Clerc
  • Thomas and Gallaudet sail to America to start on their plan. They sailed on a ship named,  St. Augusta.
  • Gallaudet met the Braidwood family here, and was inspired to xontinue his work, He wanted to know their strategy, but they refused to tell. Eventually, he meets Laurent Clerc, who is very smart, and good with educating deaf students.
  • Gallaudet establishes American School for the Deaf 
  • Gallaudet meets with Laurent Clerc to tell him about his plan. Clerc agrees to assist him in the establishment of the deaf school. He decides to sail back with him to America.
  • I would be honored to sail to America to work with you.
  • Clerc and Gallaudet sail back to America to follow through with Gallaudet's plan, on a ship named, St. Augusta.
  • They established the American school for the Deaf in 1817, being very successful. This school is located in Hartford, Connecticut, USA.
  • During the year of 1817, Hartford, Connecticut,  Thomas Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc finished the school, and called American School for the Deaf.
