Storyboard Text

  • Thomas' Encounter with Alice
  • Why does your daughter seem so lonely and why can she not speak with me?
  • With your permission I would very much like to help her learn how to communicate and establish a setting for her to learn how to do so
  • Alice is Deaf and has been since she was born, therefore she doesn't have an effective way to communicate.
  • Not only will I allow you to help her, but I will also pay for you to go to England and do research on how to help Alice
  • Thomas' First Stop in England
  • Hi! I am Thomas Gallaudet. I am here to ask you how you teach deaf children how to communicate. I am trying to learn so I can teach the Deaf how to communicate.
  • Hello Mr. Gallaudet, I'm a member of the Braidwood family and I am sorry, but our methods are secret and we do not share them with anyone
  • Trip to France
  • Wow! This is amazing, I had no idea that you could communicate with your hands, and so many of your students are fantastic learners!
  • Yes I was taught French sign language by my neighbors and share it with Deaf children and adults to help them learn how to communicate.
  • Hello I am Laurent Clerc and I would love to help you on your mission in starting a school for the deaf.
  • Thomas Gallaudet was neighbors to Mason Cogswell, who had a daughter who was deaf. Intrigued by this, Gallaudet wanted to help Alice communicate with others since he was a lonely child as well, and Alice's Father Mason then paid for Gallaudet to go to Europe to help his daughter.
  • Sign Language to America
  • Now, we plan to start a school for the deaf, but do any American's know French sign language?
  • Well maybe not, but we don't know any other form of sign language, so we could just modify ours and create a new one in America!
  • Gallaudet went to England and met with the Braidwood family to try and learn how to teach deaf people to communicate. The Braidwoods would not share their method, so Gallaudet moved on to France to try and get more information.
  • Martha's Vineyard
  • I don't know if i understand FSL
  • Hopefully, there will be some modifications to this new form of sign language
  • Gallaudet went to France and viewed a class taught by Abbe de la Eppe. Gallaudet viewed and was amazed at what he saw: All people being able to communicate, and was especially impressed by one student-Laurent Clerc.
  • American School For the Deaf
  • We did it! We've created a language all understand in America so Deaf can effectively communicate!
  • Yay! Now all will have no issues communicating with our modern American sign language!
  • Laurent Clerc was a Deaf student of Abbe. He teamed up with Thomas Gallaudet to travel to America to try and spread the sign language. They traveled to America to try and establish a school for the Deaf.
  • Many of the children at Martha's Vineyard went to Thomas and Clerc's school. They had a very large population and influenced the sign langue at the school, which ended up being a mix of French sign language and Martha's Vineyard sign language.
  • There should, otherwise no one from here will know how to communicate well enough
  • Their school was established in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817. The school had many students and the sign language consisted of 60% French sign language, and 40% Martha's Vineyard sign language, and by 1869, 1500 students graduated from the American School for the Deaf.
