  • Gallaudet's Concern
  • She is deaf and doesn't have any way to communicate with them. She doesn't have any way to communicate with them. None of the kids know will talk to her. I wish they had a school for kids just like her.
  • Why does Alice never play with any of the other kids?
  • I wish I had friends.
  • Meeting the Braidwood's
  • We welcome you to England but that is a method that we as a family do not give to anyone no matter how many times they ask.
  • Mr Braidwood. How do you teach the children sign lanuage?
  • Abbe De La Eppes Demonstration
  • The way I teach the children is by signing and having them translate onto a board .
  • I really like this method of teaching. I think I might go back to America and try it.
  • Thomas Gallaudet noticed that his neighbor's daughter was not playing or talking to  the other children. Thomas decided to ask her father Mason Cogswell why she wan't associating with the other children. Mason explained that Alice was deaf and that the other children did not know how to communicate with her.
  • Back in America
  • No problem Thomas.
  • I really appreciate you coming back to America with me to start this school.
  • Mason Cogswell decided to fund a trip for Thomas to go to the UK  to meet the Braidwood family. The Braidwood family had a secret way to teach Deaf children how to speak and "hear." Thomas wanted to know their secret to teaching children this but the Baidwood's would not give up their secret.
  • American Asylum at Hartford for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb
  • I can't believe this school is going to help so many kids communicate that couldn't before. I'm so excited to help these kids.
  • Me too Thomas!
  • Since the Braidood's would not give up their secret Thomas went to London to watch a demonstration of Deaf students. Abbe De La Eppes, a priest would sign questions and the students would respond to a question on a board. Gallaudet was very impressed with this method and anted to go to America and create a school.
  • Teaching and Helping Deaf Children
  • I love teaching and helping these kids!
  • This is going really well so far! These kids seem to be learning a lot.
  • Thomas Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc (one of Abbe's brightest students decided to come to America to establish a school for the deaf. It took their boat almost a month to get there.
  • The American Asylum at Hartford for the Education and Instruction for the Deaf and the Dumb was founded in 1817 in Hartford, Connecticut. This school established the method of using sign language to teach the curriculum, but it wasn't pure FSL.
  • Within oneyear of the establishment of the Hartford school there were 31 students from 10 different states. By 1869 over 1,500 students had graduated  from the school. The learning developed tramendously over the years and this school became a big factor in creating "modern ASL."
  • I love this school!
