Lida and her young sister Larissa get torn apart. Lida gets taken with the older kids, but Larissa stays. Lida starts to worry. Lida travels many days in a wagon with other girls and boys her age, there's bugs and they starve. The only thing that makes them happy is singing together.
After many days the kids are taken out of the wagon. They have to wash their clothes and wash themselves in cold water. After that, the girls are taken to Barracks 7, their new home. There's dirty bunk beds, and one small heater that doesn't work. All the girls are instructed to sew a OST sign on their dresses.
Lida finds out that people from the Northeast in Europe are considered to be Russian. So when she goes to get food, they get the worst food because she is considered to be a Russian. Lida gets assigned to work in the Laundry place, she sews clothes for soldiers and for Inge, her boss.
The big turning point is that Lida is designed to make bombs for the Nazis. Lida and some of the girls from her Barrack decided to sabotage the bombs. They snuck in dirt to make the bombs instead of gunpowder. Then one day the factory exploded. Lida thought that she wasn't going to get away with her friends, but because she stayed, it brought her to a better place.
Soon the Barrack that Lida was in got bombed. Lida ran out with her friend Juli, and saw that she had a gun. There was a officer, at the same time they fired. They both killed themselves, but Lida had to continue. A couple months passed and Lida was in a new factory. And soon enough that got bombed also. Lida hold a soldier talking in a language she never heard, English. The American soldier took her to their station.
There they bathed her in warm water, fed her and clothed her. Lida asked around if anyone has seen Larissa, but the people said they haven't. A couple weeks passed and when Lida was in the church, someone touched her shoulder. It was Luka! They finally reunited after many months. They spent 2 months talking, but then something happened. Luka and Larissa got a letter from Larissa stating where she is and that the family that adopted her is willing to take them.
