Samuel and his family are leaving London to break free from strict laws. They head far from London to America. Samuel has no clue of what any other place looks like except for where they live. When they get to the New World they run into a lot of different adventures and problems.
When Samuel, his family and the other colonists get to the New World they meet different tribes that are already living there. The problem is one tribe, the Manteos', is nice and helps them but the other tribe, the Roanokes', do not want them there because they think they are stealing their land.
Samuel becomes good friends with the natives from the Manteos tribe and he shares with them his story telling skills. However, the Roanokes come to their village and demand they leave right away. The colonists must get ready to fight.
The Roanokes come in the night and attack the colonists to try to get them to leave. The colonists thought they were ready to fight but they quickly lose the battle. Many of them escape but some are captured by the natives.
The colonists that were able to escape make it safely to Croatoan village are welcomed and invited to stay and build homes. The ones that were captured were taken as slaves.
Samuel and his mother and other colonists were able to live happily but they always wondered what happened to the others, including Samuel's father, who was captured. Some sources give hope that they were all found alive eventually.
