  • At the Hippodrome in Constantinople, there would be chariot races between a green and a blue team.

  • Blue and Green members were upset about the fact that some of their members were arrested. They denounced Justinian which caused fights and riots for a week. 
  • The Eastern Orthodox Church (2)
  • The Greek Orthodox Church has a Sunday Church service called the divine liturgy with the priest and the people chanting the hymns.
  • Conflicts between east and West
  • Empress Irene was the ruler of the Byzantine Empire, but she was a woman. Pope Leo III did not view her as a true leader and this is important because the Byzantine empire needed a strong emperor to defend the church from the east.
  • The Greek Orthodox Church was known for its iconography and its architecture during the Byzantine empire. The icons were painted on wood and were put in front of the Altar.

  • Pope Leo III banned the use of religious images and started a policy of icon smashing. It was opposed by many and this policy was no longer in effect in 843 C.E.
