  • The setting is in a courtroom in Maycomb, Alabama. A black man named Tom Robinson was convicted of rape and is on trial. The time period is the early 1930's, and the jury was made up of all white people.
  • To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  • Atticus Finch - lawyer and father of Scout and Jem. He helps Tom Robinson.
  • Jean Louise (Scout) Finch - lives with her brother and dad. Smart and a 'tomboy.'
  • Jeremy (Jem) Finch - Scout's brother. 'Typical American boy.'
  • Charles (Dill) Harris - Jem and scout's summer neighbor and friend.
  • Tom Robinson - Black field hand accused of rape. Tom is one of the novel’s 'mocking birds.'

  • Arthur (Boo) Radley - Never sets foot outside. One of the novel's 'mocking birds.'
  • Problem: Tom Robinson is accused of rape and is presented among a fully white jury. He knows that the judge will favor the woman who accused him because she is white. Atticus Finch takes Tom's side but is put under fire for that decision. The whole ordeal helps open the eyes of young Scout and Jem

  • Solution: Although being innocent, Tom Robinson is sent to prison for his supposed crime. A riot is held and people get him out, but he is soon shot and killed by a white police officer. This shows yet another example of a mockingbird, a good person hurt by the evil of mankind.
