Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones was a woman to be reckoned with. "She was a large woman with a large purse that had everything in it but hammer and nails..." Working at the hotel beauty shop often resulted in long days, and today was one of those days she found herself walking alone in the midst of the night, except, she wasn't really alone...
There must be plenty of dollars in that big purse of hers...
It was all so sudden when a young boy tried snatching her purse, failing as the strap broke and he tumbles to the ground. "The large woman simply turned around and kicked him right square in his blue-jeaned sitter."
" When I get through with you, sir, you are going to remember Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones."
"...he began to struggle. Mrs.Jones stopped, jerked him around in front of her, put a half nelson... continued to drag him up the street."
Ain't you got nobody at home to tell you to wash your face? I ought to teach you right from wrong... Are you hungry?
"...I fix us something to eat. You might run that comb through your hair so you will look presentable.”
He notices how she leaves her purse unsupervised and he did not trust the woman not to trust him so he scoots to the edge of the seat thinking that if she wanted to, she could see him clearly.
She cuts him half of her 10 cent cake and she insists that he eat more. "When they were finished eating she got up and said..."
"Take this ten dollars and buy yourself those blue suede shoes you want. And next time, do not make the mistake of latching onto my pocketbook nor nobody else's..."
Behave yourself, boy!
I should've said more.
Thank You m'am...
"...but although his lips moved, he couldn't even say that as he turned at the foot of the barren stoop and looked up at the large woman in the door. Then she shut the door."
