"Now you tell your father not to teach you any more. It's best to begin reading with a fresh mind."
"Here Walter, come get it."
"He's a Cunningham."
In chapter 1, Scout and Jem argue over how Jem had broken his arm. They meet a boy named Dill who was really interested in bringing out Boo Radley from the mysterious Radley house. The children are frightened to go near the house so they look from a distance to see if anything is going on.
Scout asks Jem to take her to school where she meets her new teacher named Miss Caroline. She was more than 21 years old and has auburn hair with pink cheeks. When Scout is told to read, Mrs. Caroline discovers she is literate, being able to read and write. Scout protests by telling her she wasnt taught anything.
Mrs. Caroline is new to the Maycomb County so she is not familiar with the families and their conditions. It was lunch time, and she asks all the student to take out their lunches. She goes to each row but finds out Walter Cunningham has no lunch. She offers him a quarter but he refuses it. She gets mad but doesnt realize he is a Cunningham.
