Thomas was sitting down bragging about his ablity of power dunking to some of the guys of the track team when one of them got tired of his bragging and bet he couldn't clear a 6'6 pole. According to the text Thomas said he decided to put his hops where his mouth was.
without any knowledge or understanding of pole vaulting Thomas agreed to doing it and ran home and got his sneakers. Amazingly according to the text he was able to clear the 6'6 pole without dropping it, then a 6'8, and then finally he cleared a 7'0 pole.
Once they figured out he could jump a 7'0 pole they told the track coach and allowed him to join late. 2 days later he went to the track meet. in the text it says he cleared 6'8.25 on his first attempt which allowed him to qualify for national championships. Then he cleared 7'0.25 which was the university new record. Lastly he cleared 7'3.25.
2 months later Thomas went to the commonwealth games in Australia and competed in them. he placed 4th in the games but in the text it says he was in a tie but he didn't understand how the tie breakers worked still so he thought he was in 3rd but it turned out he was in 4th.
with only 8months of pole vault training Thomas attended the world championships. there was many people with years of training at the championships. He wax able to advance to the finals with the reigning Olympic champion Holmes according to the text. they both somehow made it to 8'7. surprisingly Thomas who had 6 months of training won the championships,
a tv station asked a scientist to examine Thomas. they found out he had very long and stiff Achilles tendon. he was very tall compared to Holmes. Holmes had a small and stiff Achilles tendon. in the text it said the bigger and stiffer the Achilles tendon the more energy it can store and the more power an athlete can get. they also said the Achilles tendon is only one puzzle piece and there's more reasons how they ended up in the same place. but, Thomas has not improved in 6 years but Holmes has.
