  • I can't pay for taxes!
  • Taxes have now been raised!
  • I'm just going to smuggle so i won't have to pay!
  • In here!
  • I didn't do anything!
  • Colonist were very upset and angry because there was an increase on the taxes.  Because of the increase on taxes, some colonist started to smuggle goods so they wouldn't have to pay them.
  • We have to do something about these taxes! They are violating our rights!
  •  Colonist were smuggling and a lot of them were. Because of all of the smuggling, they allowed officers to seize goods from accused smugglers without having to go to court.
  • We have rights as colonists!
  • Yes indeed, we will find something else so we can get better income.
  • A lot of the colonist that the officers would come to seize goods, were guilty. Plenty of colonist were wrongfully accused of smuggling.
  • Sir, the sugar act is not working we need to stop it and make another one.
  • The colonist believed that this act and the other new laws violated their rights. They thought that all colonists should not get their rights violated!
  • As colonist being British citizens, they have argued that they had rights to be viewed as innocent until they were proven guilty. They also believed that they could secure their homes without have an officer barge into their homes.
  • The Sugar act was not very successful on making the income as they hoped they would. So they stopped this act after they knew it was not going too well.
