  • According to Hickok, Tutt was in debt $40 from a previous horse trade. Tutt paid Hickok the $40 he owed then Hickok said he owed him $35 more dollars due to a previous poker game, Tutt said it was $25 and didn't pay it so Hickok took his pocket watch in collateral 
  • Bill and Davis were at the square facing each other and Hickok called out "Dave here I am" he gave a final warning and Dave told Tutt to not walk across that square that at watch
  • Tutt reached for his pistol. Hickok drew his gun and steadied it on his opposite forearm. The both of them fired a single shot at about the same time. Tutt missed, but Hickok's bullet struck Tutt in the left side between the fifth and seventh rib.
