Douglass grabbed covey by the throat, Covey couldn't get out of his grip. “Take hold of him!” Covey said. “Come get him now!” Coveys men Hughes, and Bill came over immediately. Hughes tried to jump in and help but Douglass kicked him right out. Bill didn't even try to get involved. This fight was now up to Douglass and Covey. Covey and Douglass were at it for hours and Eventually Covey gave up and Douglass won the fight.
After this fight Douglass felt like a whole new person. He for once felt like a man who had worth to him. He had a huge boost in his self confidence. He felt as if he had just risen from the dead with a whole new perspective on things. He gained hope in being free. This fight was a huge turning point to his freedom and life.
From the time the of the fight to Douglass leaving, he never got whipped by Covey again. He was still a slave that had to follow orders but he felt as if he had a little bit of worth and power. A few years later Douglass escaped slavery and became an influential writer and speaker to many different people. He was/ is a very inspirational man.
