Begin the examination by looking at your breasts in the mirror. Observe for changes in breast shape, size, and contour; puckering of the skin; or areas that appear red.
Use light, medium, and firm pressure applied with the pads of the fingers. Move your fingers in circles, spokes of a wheel, or rows, but follow the same technique with each BSE. Feel every part of the breast, including the nipple area and the armpit to the collarbone.
Repeat the process when lying down with a folded towel under the shoulder of the side being examined. This entire examination should be repeated monthly 3 days after the end of menstruation or anytime if you no longer menstruate.
