Storyboard Text

  • Begin the examination by looking at your breasts in the mirror. Observe for changes in breast shape, size, and contour; puckering of the skin; or areas that appear red.
  • Use light, medium, and firm pressure applied with the pads of the fingers. Move your fingers in circles, spokes of a wheel, or rows, but follow the same technique with each BSE. Feel every part of the breast, including the nipple area and the armpit to the collarbone.
  • Repeat the process when lying down with a folded towel under the shoulder of the side being examined. This entire examination should be repeated monthly 3 days after the end of menstruation or anytime if you no longer menstruate.
