It all started with the eye, it drove the narrator crazy. Until one night he decided to kill the old man.
Every day for a week at midnight, the narrator would stare and stare at the old man and wait till the eye would open. But, it would always be closed. But one night, the eye was opened.

The narrator could here the old mans heart beating, growing louder, louder, and louder. He couldn't stand it anymore. The old man shrieked once. The narrator pulled the heavy bed over him and killed him.
A neighbor heard a shriek during the night. So the then the police came the next day. The narrator had no problem letting them in and lied that he was absent in the country.
The narrator let the police in. They were are talking, the narrator having no worries, but then he started getting pale and wished that they would leave. He started to freak out because he could hear the old mans heart.
The narrator yelled, "'Villains!' I shrieked, 'dissemble no more! I admit the deed! --- tear up the planks! ---here, here! It is the beating of his hideous heart,'" (Poe 81). The narrator showed the police that he killed him.
