Cabeza de Vaca is the leader of a Spaniard group who is lost at sea. Cabeza de Vaca has to take control of the barge and lead his crew out of the middle of the sea. Cabeza de Vaca finds an island and decides to land the ship there.
The ship ends up crashing on the island and the crew gets stuck there. They have to make a fire and sit around it to stay warm and survive through the night. They will look around the island in the morning.
Cabeza de Vaca had the strongest man in the crew, Lope de Oviedo, climb to the top of the tree to look around the island. Lope de Oviedo leaves the crew to look around the island. He ends up coming back with a group of Indians following closely behind him.
Cabeza de Vaca spoke with the Indians and the Indians exchanged gifts with the crew as a pledge of friendship. The crew also needed a place to live; Cabeza de Vaca begged the Indians to let the crew live in their village and the Indians said yes.
The Indians allow Cabeza de Vaca and his crew to live in their village; the Indians force the crew to become medicine men or else they will no longer feed them. Cabeza de Vaca and the crew need the food so they agree to work as medicine men for the Indians.
