Democrat Stephen Douglas was also nominated for Senate for Illinois. Lincoln challenged Douglas to a debate. This became known as the Lincoln-Douglas Debates.
Lincoln and Douglas debated about slavery and the rights of slaves.
Although Stephen Douglas won the debates, Abraham Lincoln became an important part of the Republican Party and gained recognition which helped him become the 16th president of the U.S.
