The second estate made up 1% of the total population, it was made up of nobles and members of the royal family. Louis XIV held a meeting of the estates-general, which included representatives from all three estates.
On June 20th, 1789 members of the third estate, also known as the national assembly, took 'the Tennis Court Oath'. By taking this oath they vowed "not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances required until the constitution of the kingdom is established".
