Irish immigrants: A journey to a new world
Poverty in Ireland caused by Britain made some of the Irish come to America, hopeful to escape the poverty.
The in 1845 a disease made Ireland's main food source shrink, causing a great famine. It killed 1 million people, causing more to move to America.
So a bunch of them immigrated to America to escape the death and poverty
Once in America, most Irish immigrants settled in large cities or city ports. They worked low paying jobs and dangerous work such as being a servant, or even building railroads.
Many of them had to live in the ports because by American standers they were poor,
Some people called nativists- opposed the immigration and out up signs such as, "No Irish need apply" they thought the immigrants would never look to adapt American ways.
