Storyboard Text

  • The participants where told to pick a role out of a hat to determine who would be the learner and who would be the teacher. It was always rigged so that the confederate was the learner and the participant was the teacher
  • The participant then observed the 'learner' being strapped into the chair after being told the 'learner' had a heart condition. The 'teacher' was then given a real 45V shock.
  • They had to administer a shock whenever there was a wrong answer starting at 15V and going up to 450V going up in sets of 15. They believed that they were giving real shocks.
  • The 'teacher' then had to teach the 'learner' a set of matching pairs and then test them on them.
  • All the participants obeyed up to 300V
  • At 300V the 'learner' banged on the wall and asked for the experiment to be stopped. However the 'experimenter' gave the 'teacher' a verbal prod to continue
  • The experiment requires you to continue
  • 14 of the 40 left before the final 450V shock, but 65% (26) administered the 450V even after the 'learner had fallen silent and stopped answering and then continued to do so until ordered to stop by the 'experimenter'
  • Many of the participants showed signs of extreme stress such as sweating, nervous fits of laughter and 3 experienced full on seizures
  • You have no other choice but to continue.
  • They had only being obeying the orders of the 'experimenter'
  • Afterwards the participant was debriefed and shown the 'learner' to prove he had not been harmed
