A wounded zebra, in a National Geographic special, looking for someone, anyone to sit next to.
"All I have to do is prop the phone against my ear and "uh huh" occasionally"
"My hair is completely hidden under the comforter. I look for the shapes in my face. Could I put a face in my tree, like a dryad from Greek mythology? Two muddy-circle eyes under black-dash eyebrows, piggy-nose nostrils and a chewed-up horror of a mouth."
In each of these quotes Melinda describes various aspects, and characteristic from her. As seen in the first one she describes the social status, in the second one she describes her past relationships with one of her closest friend (Rachael), and the 3rd one is restating the fact that she is alone and expresses the desire about being with someone. Moreover the 4th explains her brief, and plastic relationship with heather, which is all about the fact of having someone as a friend, and the 5th one explains her physical appearance and disgust for it.
