Storyboard Text

  • Farm Laborers Replace Slaves
  • You can live on my property, as long as you give me a share of your crops
  • Will do, sir...
  • The Opposition
  • The African Americans don't deserve rights!
  • We must stop Reconstruction!
  • Fighting the Opposition
  • We have the right to stop groups like yours!
  • It's our job to put an end to this!
  • Sharecropping was where landowners provided housing and all farming materials/tools for workers who gave a share of their crops as payment. Tenant farming is where tenants owned all livestock/materials in exchange for paying the owners a set amount of money and keep crops as rent.
  • Southern Comeback
  • What will happen to us, African Americans?
  • We are giving rights, like voting, back to some Confederates, and the Freedman's Bureau is coming to an end
  • The KKK was a terrorist group, supported by white plantation owners, which rose against the Republican Party and African Americans. They wanted to destroy Reconstruction and the rights it gave to former slaves through violence.
  • A Failed Reconstruction
  • The Republicans aren't working together anymore
  • Well, the Supreme Court keeps undoing what us, Radicals are doing
  • Congress passed a series of Enforcement Acts which gave the Government power to station federal troops in areas where the KKK was present.
  • The End of an Era
  • Alright, I will remove the troops, and I am happy as long as the 13-15th amendments remain in the Constitution
  • Soon after the Enforcement Acts, the Amnesty Acts were passed. This weakened the Republican Party as it gave back power to former Confederate government officials and voters. At the same time the Freedmen's Bureau expired and Southern Democrats were gaining political Power.
  • The Southern Democrats will rise again!
  • Reconstruction ultimately failed due to the disunity in the Republican Party, a series of bank failures known as the Panic of 1873, the Supreme Court undoing the actions of Radicals, and the rising power of Southern Democrats.
  • Well, our bank failures are diverting our attention away from the south
  • Well, us, Southern Democrats are doing well!
  • In Election of 1876 President Hayes won the electoral vote but lost the popular vote. In order for southern congressmen to accept him as president, they demanded the removal of federal troops from southern territories. Hayes compiled and reconstruction ended.
  • We will accept you as president as long as you remove federal troops in our Southern territory
