Bryce met Juli in the second grade. She was loud, annoying, and would not stop following him until the second grade. "All I've ever wanted is for Juli Baker to leave me alone."
On Collier Street, there was a large sycamore tree that Juli climbed up every day until it was cut down. "We watched them work for a little while, the chainsaws throttle, smoking as they chewed the wood... She didn't show at the bus stop next morning and didn't ride the bus home that afternoon either."
For the science fair, Juli hatched chickens. When they started laying eggs, she would give some to Bryce's family every week. Little did she know, Bryce was throwing them away for the two years that she was giving them. "So I told her we were afraid of salmonella poisoning because her yard was a mess and that we were just trying to spare her the feelings."
Bryce soon realizes what a jerk he was and starts to have feelings for her. He tries to fix it but Juli won't talk to him. Eventually he gets the urge to kiss in front of the entire school. "I didn't care where I was, I didn't care who saw. I wanted, just had to kiss her. I leaned in, closed my eyes and then..."
Juli then freaks out and ran away. Every time he would get close to her, she would run away. Then because Bryce liked Juli Baker his best friend Garrett decided to ditch him. "And dude, the truth is, if your gonna be like this, I don't need the association.' I got right in his face and said, 'Good! 'Cause you know what? Neither do I."
Bryce gets fed up with Juli for not talking to him. So, he ask Mr. Baker if he could plant a sycamore tree in his front yard to show how he feels about her. "I could tell from the shape of the leaves, from the texture of the trunk. This was a sycamore... I also can't stop wondering about Bryce. What has he been trying to tell me?... Maybe it's time to meet him in proper light."
