Mr. Graves and Mr. Summers do an event called “The Lottery” meaning that every year everyone in the town gets the slip of paper out of a chipped, old black box and who ever gets the black dot gets stoned to death.
Mrs. Hutchinson and Mrs. Delacriox wait their turn behind the crowd from their slip of paper and Mrs. Hutchinson looked behind her head and saw her husband and her two children.
Mr. Summers calls up the first two lottery contenders Mr. Delacroix and Mrs. Dunbar to get the slip of paper from the old black box.
When Mr. Summers pulled a slip of paper from the box he called out Bill Hutchinson and his wife Tessie Hutchinson came up and told Mr. Summers that it wasn’t fair because she felt that she was rushed and she didn't know what day it was.
Mr. Summers does the final moment of holding the winning slip of paper and it was blank and the black dot belong to Mrs. Hutchinson and Bill Hutchinson was blank and everyone paused.
Everyone paused for moment then all the kids, the families, and Mr. Graves and Mr. Summers began to throw pebbles on the side of her head and Old Man Wartner had cheered people on to throw rocks at Tessie and she said her final words "This isn't fair!"
