Stephen Douglas- wrote the Kansas-Nebraska Act Republican Party- a political party against the expansion of slavery to the West Kansas- Nebraska Act- a plan that would divide the remainder of the Louisiana Territory into two territories, Kansas an Nebraska, and popular sovereignty will the decide if it is a free or slave state.

Whigs, Free-soilers, Democrats, and abolitionist joined forces and in 1854 the Republic Party was created. The Democrats want to expand slavery while Republicans wanted to end it.

The Democrats chose former ambassador, secretary of state James Buchanan as their candidate. The Republicans chose former colonel, politician, and explorer John C. Fremont as their candidate.
Millard Fillmore- he ran for the presidency in the Election of 1856 representing the American Party James Buchanan- he was the secretary of state while Polk was president and he was an ambassador in Great Britain. He is a Democrat and won the Election of 1856 and became the 15th president.
After the states voted, James Buchanan won 14 out of 15 of the slave states, John C. Fremont won 11 of the sixteen free states, and Millard Fillmore won 1 state. In the end, James Buchanan won the election and became the 15th president.
