"When de Wilde heard the enemy singing carols he was overcome with emotion 'It was unreal, sublime... The Christmases of long ago were coming to life again, all the things we had known in our childhood, the family, the countryside, the fireside, our eyes dazzled by the tree with its sparkling candles...'" (Murphy,61).
A soldier from France regaled the story fo an outdoor service held only 50 yards away from the Germans (Murphy,61).
Text Structure: Descriptive
'''A shot has been fired Oh, the folly of that bullet which has torn the air apart and perhaps reached its target. All at once their signing stops...What a pity'"(62-63).
Truce By: Jim Murphy
Mindset- Growth: Persists to overcome obstacles
Although the war influenced violence on the soldiers they denied it and came to peace with their enemies for one day of the year.
The difference is that the war is a glaring problem like a steamroller that can't be stopped. Yet the soldiers bravely delay the steamroller if only for a little to celebrate the period of joy that is Christmas.
Summary Headline and Aha! Huh!
Headline Soldiers stop fighting!
To have peace, if only for a few hours in 1 day, the soldiers instituted a peace treaty between another, yet as the bullet tore apart the air it shows that there will always be somebody that wants to ruin the peace.
Why do you think the soldiers participated in the truce? Do you think they were motivated by something?
Holding up those boards, both sides showed that they had something in common, Christmas. They showed that even in the bloodiest and dangerous of times there can be a silver lining of peace.
YOU NO FIGHT, WE NO FIGHT
Five topics and/or themes Peace, hope, it doesn't matter who you are, it is the people that fight that can bring peace, and determination.
Aha! The soldiers think peace is possible and some soldiers still think that it's not possible. Huh? If they can have peace now why did they start fighting in the first place?
