Lizabeth's brother convinces her to mess with Miss Lottie. She was hesitant at first, but once she started throwing rocks at Miss Lottie's marigolds, her emtions took over and caused her to be very immature.
Lizabeth overhears her parents argueing about their financial struggles. Her father feels ashamed that he doesn't have a job and he can't support his family. This pushes Lizabeth over the edge, expecially since she was contemplating her previous actions.
Lizabeth grabs her brother and goes to Miss Lottie's yard in the middle of the night, after hearing her parents argueing. She rips up all of the marigolds in a fit of rage and sadness. Miss Lottie does nothing, just watches. Lizabeth sees this as her losing her innocence and becoming a woman.
