As they got out of the car and waved goodbye to the Flaibers, Debbie makes up an excuse to leave. Maureen finally notices that something is bothering Debbie and she ask her what's wrong. Debbie tries to figure out a way to tell her. Then, she says, "I miss being friends'' and Maureen laughs and says that they are still friends.
Soon, they go to a nearby lake and Debbie tells Maureen that Glenna doesn't want to be her friend. Maureen denies it. They both look at each other and knew that it was sort of true. Debbie felt that it was a relief, in a way, to know that Maureen saw what she saw.
Debbie thought for a moment and could tell that Maureen was not going to decide weather to dump Glenna or not right then. She realized that Maureen saw something in Glenna that she couldn't see. Debbie thought that she should leave that topic behind. So, her and Maureen dangled their feet and sank them into the mud. In all, Debbie thought that it was the best afternoon of Summer ever.
