Why were longhorn cattle important to the Texas cattle industry? They made buttons, cups, decorations, furniture, and household utensils from the horns. When the civil war broke out, the Confederate army needed to feed the troops. When the war went on, Texans found it hard to move their cattle. By the end of the war, there were about 5 million cattle roaming the state.
