  • Farming and cattle
  • Why were longhorn cattle important to the Texas cattle industry? They made buttons, cups, decorations, furniture, and household utensils from the horns. When the civil war broke out, the Confederate army needed to feed the troops. When the war went on, Texans found it hard to move their cattle. By the end of the war, there were about 5 million cattle roaming the state.
  • How did the oil boom affect national oil markets and local communities? Overdrilling soon led to a drop in underground pressure making further oil drilling difficult
  • What are some advantages of railroads over other types of transportation in Texas? Between 1850 and 1876, Texas cities and counties issued about $2.4 million in railroad bonds.
