The Battle of Fort Sumter, 1861 Rebel forces attacked a Union Fort (union led by soon to be General Ulysses S. Grant). There were no deaths but the Union surrendered marking the first battle and start of the Civil War.
The Battle at Antietam, 1862 Single bloodiest battle in the Civil War because the Confederates had recruited soldiers to meet demands for troops in the south. The Union had head home with a victory.
The Battle at Gettysburg, 1863 There were more than 16000 more soldiers on the Union than the Confederate Army(Led by Robert E. Lee).The battle ended in a victory for the Union (led by Ulysses S. Grant). This victory gave the Union control over the Mississippi river. The Union was able to push away an invasion in the North and Vicksburg.
Siege at Vicksburg, 1863 The Union Successfully captured the strong hold to have control of the Mississippi River and successfully divided the Confederate States in two.
Announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, 1862 On this day President Abraham Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation which stated that all slaves in rebelling territories were to be freed. The proclamation was not signed until January of 1863.
Lee's Surender in the Appomattox Court House, 1865 This was huge point in the Civil War because the confederates general surrenders and this ended the war. Inside General Robert E. Lee surrenders the Confederate forces of Virginia.
