  • The story has the purpose to put a myth to how the Atlas Mountains were created.
  • Atlas was the Titan god, he was god of astronomy and navigation he also held the world on his shoulders.
  • Atlas was married to his sister Phoebe, and had the children Hesperides, the Hyades, Hyas, the Pleiades, Calypso, Dione and Maera.
  • One day Perseus, who had just cut off Medusa's head, visited. Atlas heard the news and did not like it at all.
  • Atlas had threatened him to go away. Perseus didn't like being threatened by Atlas. Instead of talking it out he got Atlas to looks into Medusa's eyes.
  • Immediately Atlas turned to stone and created what we know as the Atlas mountains.
