The Reason For Seasons
Demeter watched over the harvest for everyone. She had a daughter named Persephone, and she was very beautiful. Demeter kept the harvest fresh and flourishing. It was important that she got what she wanted and that no one made her mad, or else she would let the crops die.
Hades was the God of the Underworld. He had a three-headed guard-dog named Cerberus. One day Hades took Cerberus out for a walk.
On the walk, Demeter was watching Persephone play. Cerberus saw her and ran over to her. Persephone started talking to him. When Hades heard Persephone's voice, he looked at her and immediately fell in love. He grabbed her and Cerberus and went back to the Underworld.
Hades locked Persephone in the Hall of Hades and kept her there for a very long time. Meanwhile up on Earth, Demeter was very sad and upset that her daughter was gone. Zeus somehow heard about it and sent the god Hermes to make a deal with Hades. He was to keep Persephone during the fall and winter but let her go to see her mother during spring and summer.
Hades agreed with the deal and let her go as promised, but took her back when he was allowed. Demeter was happy all during spring and summer. This is when the crops flourished and everything became bright and colorful. During fall and winter, when Persephone was gone, Demeter became sad again and let the crops die and everything became dull.
