Storyboard Text

  • The story of Athens
  • This is the story of how Athens was named.
  • Nearly every city in Greece had a patron god except for one town on the coast of Greece.
  • One day Poseidon challenged Athena to a contest. The contest was to see who could come up with the best gift for the people of the town.
  • Poseidon hit a rock with his staff. The people were glad! Fresh water was super important! But when they tasted the water, they noticed it was actually salt water!
  • Athena gave the people an olive tree. The people were happy with Athena's gift!
  • Athena won the contest, so the city was called Athens in Athena's honor.
