The story of Athens
This is the story of how Athens was named.
Nearly every city in Greece had a patron god except for one town on the coast of Greece.
One day Poseidon challenged Athena to a contest. The contest was to see who could come up with the best gift for the people of the town.
Poseidon hit a rock with his staff. The people were glad! Fresh water was super important! But when they tasted the water, they noticed it was actually salt water!
Athena gave the people an olive tree. The people were happy with Athena's gift!
Athena won the contest, so the city was called Athens in Athena's honor.
