Hi! My name is Ben. I live in Mesopotamia which is in modern day country of Iraq in the continent.
Mesopotamia is located between two rivers. The Tigris river and the Euphrates river.
Lots of people moved to the rolling foothills of the Zagros Mountains. .
But a problem has arose, there was a food shortage in the foothills because there wasn't enough space for farms. So people have moved to the plains of Sumer.
But there is a problem because of the rivers. The water source is not controllable. In the spring all the rain and snow from the mountains flow down to the plains and they flood. But during the rest of the year the soil was as hard as stone.
But the people had two solutions. The first was irrigation systems. They made these for their fields. The second were levees. These were built to prevent flooding.
The irrigation canals from the system had to be cleaned regularly. Lots of silt would clog the system and that could ruin the whole system. So farmers had to come together to help the cause.
And because the farmers worked so well together and communicated the people made cities.
But as cities grew and the people interacted they started fighting. The main thing they fought over was the right to use water.
Sometimes villages farther up the stream would block off the other villages so they could have more water. The fights got so intense that they ended sometimes in bloodshed.
But all in all the advancements of irrigation, levees, and cities helped Sumer rise into a region of major human advancements.
