  • Abraham Lincoln became the United States' 16th President in 1861
  • , issuing the Emancipation Proclamation that declared forever free those slaves within the Confederacy in 1863.
  • At 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 1861, Confederate troops fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina's Charleston Harbor. Less than 34 hours later, Union forces surrendered. Traditionally, this event has been used to mark the beginning of the Civil War.
  • After John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln, soldiers carried Lincoln from Ford's Theatre and across Tenth Street, so that he could pass his last moments peacefully, surrounded by those who knew him best. He died in the Petersen family's boarding house at 7:22 a.m. on April 15, 1865.
  • As the war drew to a close with the fall of Richmond on April 3, 1865, and Lee's surrender at Appomattox on April 9, there were Southern sympathizers who believed that the Confederacy could be restored. John Wilkes Booth held that belief, and it was the motive behind his plot to murder President Abraham Lincoln.
