When Atalanta was born, her father was disappointed due to the fact that she was a girl and not a boy.
He left her in a crave where she was taken into the care of a bear and other animals.
Later on, some hunters found her in a crave and were kind enough to take her in and care for her as their own.
As she was growing up, she was really good at hunting with the bow and arrow.
The Calydonian Boar was about to start and it was a punishment to the king, Oeneus, because he forgot to sacrifice a fruit to Artemis. Atalanta was willing to help defend the boar.
She met Meleager, who fell in love with her, and they both attack the boar and killed it. Atalanta was the first to hit the boar with the bow and Meleager killed it. Atalanta was given full credit for killing the boar.
