Oranges The food oranges represent love and kindness.
Paraphrase The boy went to the girls house and walked with her to the store. She picked out a piece of chocolate and it cost him a dime. He did not have enough he was a nickel short so he tried to pay with an orange. The lady understood what was happening and allowed him to pay with it and they walked home eating their chocolate and his other orange.
Connotations Some words that stood out are tiered, weighted, cracking, narrow, burned, gray, cold, December, light, chocolate and fire.
Tone The tone starts out very dark and gloomy. And it creates suspense when he does not have enough money to pay for her chocolate. It turns happy and joyful when the lady accepts the nickel and orange.
I think the shift of this poem is when the first and second stanza come together. The setting changes and they go from inside the store to outside walking on the road.
Theme I think the theme of this poem is always think of others before yourself. The boy did not hesitate to try and pay for the girls chocolate even with not enough money.
