Storyboard Text

  • T- The New Colossus by: Emma Lazarus
  • P- Summary
  • C- Connotations
  • I think that this poem is going to be about something "big and great". Colossus makes me think of something big, like a statue.
  • A- Attitude
  • This poem is about a statue (the Mother of exiles) that gives hope to the "Exiles". The exiles are the homeless, tired, poor, jailed, etc...
  • S- Shifts
  • Brazen, conquering, mighty, imprisoned, command, tired, poor, refuse, wretched, homeless, and temp-tost.
  • T- Theme
  • The attitude is hopeful and serious. "Send these, the homeless, temp-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" This makes me think that the "golden gate" is a symbol for better life.
  • The shift is where the statue is "speaking". Also, when the author transitions from what the statue is not to what it is (in the first stanza).
  • I think that the theme is giving hope and strength. The statue represents hope for the Exiles.
